Today: Climate Change in Africa

Learning Targets:

  • I can locate important geographic features on the continent of Africa.​
  • I can effectively use map features to create a map of Africa.
  • I can understand the impact of climate change in Africa.

Yesterday, students learned the difference between climate and weather. Today, student learned about how clime change is affecting Africa. They watch a short video of climate activists from Africa speak out as world leaders prepared to go to the COP 26 Conference. Afterwards, they answered questions with the class in the OneNote Notebooks. The remainder of class was spent labeling their Africa maps and coloring in the different climate zones.
Reminder: This was the last day to work on the Africa Map in class. It is due on Tuesday, November 23.

Today: Weather vs. Climate

Learning Targets:

  • I can locate important geographic features on the continent of Africa.​
  • I can effectively use map features to create a map of Africa.
  • I can identify the important climate zones of Africa.

Class started out with a planner update to show that the Africa Map is due next Tuesday, November 23.

Next, students learned about the difference between weather and climate by watching a Crash Course video. Then they looked at a satellite image of Africa and learned about the different climate zones. The remainder of class was spent labeling their Africa maps and coloring in the different climate zones.

Today: Creating a Map of Africa

Learning Targets:

  • I can locate important geographic features on the continent of Africa.​
  • I can effectively use map features to create a map of Africa.

Students reviewed what they’d learned about maps yesterday and, in particular, the size of Africa. Then they embarked on making a map of Africa using the class textbook. Today was only about labeling, not coloring. Tomorrow, students will use a satellite map to color their maps but today was only about labeling.

Today:Video: Digging for the Truth – King Tut, Secrets Revealed

Learning Target:

  • I can gain information about the life of an Egyptian pharaoh.

Students watched an episode of the History Channel’s “Digging for the Truth” titled King Tut: Secrets Revealed. While viewing this video, they gained information about King Tut’s death by watching scientists draw conclusions with evidence.

I am unable to find a free version of this online so I will excuse those who were absent.

Today: Student Climate Survey + Egypt unit review.

Learning Targets:

  • I can use my use my class notes to demonstrate my new learnings about Egypt.

Students completed the Student Climate Survey and then finished OneNote Activity 12 (Egypt Review) which was started yesterday. Those who finished played a quizizz game.

Today: More fun with Egyptian artifacts and Egypt unit review.

Learning Targets:

  • I can take notes from primary sources.​
  • I can look at history through multiple social science perspectives.

Students continued their work from yesterday, making observations about artifacts, finding secondary source information, and identifying a social science perspective to match the artifact. Afterwards, they began a unit review.

Today: Leaning from Egyptian artifacts

Learning Targets:

Students reviewed the social science perspectives during a review lesson. Then they explored Egyptian artifacts using skills they already knew (making observations and gathering secondary source information) and they added the new skill of identifying a social science related to each article they investigated.

Today: Daily life in ancient Egypt

Learning Targets:

  • I can explain who was in ancient Egypt’s different social classes.
  • I can explain how different social classes lived in ancient Egypt.​
  • I can compare my life to the life of an ancient Egyptian.

Students learned about ancient Egypt’s social structure during a mini-lesson. Then they learned about specific social classes during the OneNote activity. Afterwards, students compared and contrasted their lives to the ancient Egyptians.

Today: Kingdoms and Pharaohs

  • I can evaluate the effectiveness of the rulers of ancient Egypt.

Ms. Stone presented a short lesson about the major time periods of ancient Egypt and the importance of pharaohs. Then students watched a short video by National Geographic. Next, they learned about King Khufu in their OneNote Notebooks and then chose two more pharaohs to learn about independently. When finished, they voted for who they thought was the best of the three pharaohs they learned about.

Reminder: The 1st quarter ends today.
